DemoPro with iPad and Apple Pencil setup guide

Pair your iPad with your Mac over Sidecar and DemoPro turns it into a drawing surface: write and sketch by hand with the Apple Pencil, with pressure-sensitive strokes and a double tap to switch to the eraser. Perfect for teaching and for whiteboard sessions.

DemoPro used with an iPad via Sidecar and Apple Pencil

Before you start

Sidecar is the macOS feature that lets an iPad act as a second display for your Mac, wirelessly or over USB. It requires a compatible Mac and iPad signed in to the same Apple Account. Check Apple's Sidecar requirements to confirm your devices qualify.

There is nothing to install on the iPad. DemoPro runs entirely on your Mac; the iPad simply displays your Mac screen, and the Apple Pencil acts as your drawing input.

Setting up your iPad

1. Connect your iPad with Sidecar

Click the Screen Mirroring control in your Mac's Control Center (or menu bar) and select your iPad. You can also connect from System Settings > Displays by clicking the “+” pop-up and choosing your iPad. Choose to mirror your screen or extend it; extending lets you keep notes or slides on your main display while you draw on the iPad.

2. Set DemoPro to Toggle mode

On the DemoPro menu, set drawing tool activation to “Toggle”. You will still use your Mac's keyboard hotkeys to activate a tool, so Toggle mode lets you press a hotkey once and then draw freely on the iPad without holding anything down.

3. Enable Pen Pressure

On the DemoPro menu, open the General tab and turn on Pen Pressure. Freehand strokes now vary their width with how hard you press the Apple Pencil, for a natural handwriting feel. Mouse and trackpad input are unaffected.

4. Enable double tap on the Apple Pencil

With a double tap on your Apple Pencil, DemoPro switches between your active tool and the Eraser, so you can fix a stroke without reaching for the keyboard. Double tap must first be enabled in macOS: go to System Settings > Displays, select your iPad, and turn on the Apple Pencil double-tap option. Requires an Apple Pencil that supports double tap.

5. Draw

Press a drawing tool's hotkey on your Mac keyboard, then write and sketch on the iPad with the Apple Pencil. Press the hotkey again (or use Clear) when you want to return to your content. Pop over the Whiteboard or Blackboard for a clean canvas your audience can watch you fill in.
